Back to Back

Nov 02, 2025

OLD TAPPAN - "Back-to-back - it's very exciting," said Golden Knights senior outside hitter Julia Whaley after Old Tappan defended its Bergen County Volleyball title with a 3-1 victory over Immaculate Heart Academy Nov. 1. "It was a really good game, very competitive."Whaley was instrumental in the third set when she tallied 6 of her game-high 18 kills to bring the Knights back from a 21-16 deficit to a 26-24 victory, which turned the momentum squarely back in Old Tappan's favor.Junior setter Joley Giordano broke a 23-23 tie with one of her 4 kills to give OT a set point. She also had 2 blocks to go along with the 40 assists she distributed and the 9 digs she scooped."We've been working on it in practice," Giordano said of her scoring prowess. "On offense I can jump high and get points like that."An errant serve by the Knights knotted the score 24-24 but sophomore middle blocker Nadine Whaley and junior outside hitter Bianca Benasillo blasted back-to-back kills to give Old Tappan a 2-1 advantage in sets."When we were down it's really easy to get sucked into negative emotions," senior opposite hitter Eva Curko said in a published report. "But as a team we did a really good job of staying positive on the court, keeping our energy up … and playing for each other. That's ultimately what helped us succeed."In the fourth and final set Old Tappan shook off an early 3-0 Immaculate Heart Academy advantage to grab its largest lead of the set, 19-11, on a kill by Nadine Whaley, who finished with 8 kills and 3 blocks in the match.A block by Julia Whaley gave Old Tappan a match point, 24-16, but an errant serve and 2 attack errors closed the gap, giving IHA some life at 24-19. But a thunderous kill by senior middle blocker Gaby Paltag ended the set and the match, 25-19."It was very tough," Julia Whaley said. "Going in we knew it wasn't going to be easy even though there was a difference between No. 2 and No. 9 [seeds]. But we didn't let that affect what we thought was going to happen in the game. Both teams have had on-and-off seasons - no one is undefeated - but we had confidence. We knew all we could do was control what we could do on our side. Our motivation was to get to every ball."The two teams split the first two sets with Old Tappan leading for the entire first set in a 25-17 win.The Golden Knights led 16-10 in the second set when the Blue Eagles caught fire. An errant serve by Old Tappan was followed by a pair of service aces by junior Emma Fowler. After an attack error by the Knights, Fowler tallied another ace and freshman Anabelle Albano blocked a shot to tie the set 16-all. Sophomore Adrielle Crump gave IHA a 17-16 lead, but a kill by Benasillo and service ace by Giordano put Old Tappan up, 18-17.From there the lead changed hands back and forth and the score was tied at 19 and 20. Kills by Paltag and Julia Whaley sandwiched around an IHA attack error gave the Knights a 23-20 lead, but 2 OT attack errors trimmed that lead to 23-22. Then IHA committed an attack error to give Old Tappan a set point at 24-22.But an errant Knights serve, a block by Eagles sophomore Sophia Mahon, followed by 2 more OT attack errors gave IHA the second set, 26-24.Julia Whaley, in addition to having the most kills in the match, also contributed a game-high 23 digs and added 3 service aces. Benasillo blasted 14 kills and had a block. Senior libero Adriana Bryan scooped 19 digs and Curko had 7 kills, a block, 7 digs and 4 assists.Crump (14 kills, 3 service aces) and Mahon (7 kills, 4 blocks) led Immaculate Heart Academy scorers.Last year Old Tappan finished 25-0, with county and state tournament titles. Although at 17-4 they are not undefeated this year, they are again county champs and have a good shot of earning a state title too."We started the year without three starters, and at one point, we were down four starters," Old Tappan coach Melissa Landeck said in a published report. "So we had a lot of work to do to compete in September with younger kids doing an outstanding job pitching in. Then, we had to work on jelling as kids came back, so this has not been an easy road, by any means."

Nov 01, 2025

OLD TAPPAN — The best girls volleyball rivalry in North Jersey experienced some extra drama this season.Old Tappan and Immaculate Heart met in the Bergen County championship final for the third year in a row, having each won a title in the last two. The added twist came from the tournament’s change to best-of-5 format this fall. The No. 2 seed Golden Knights overcame a six-point deficit late in the third set to defeat No. 9 IHA, 25-17, 24-26, 26-24, 25-19, and defend their crown in the Old Tappan South Gym on Saturday, Nov. 1.In the best-of-3 format, the Blue Eagles would have been on the verge of a championship after winning the second set and taking a 21-15 lead in the third.Instead, Old Tappan (17-4) calmly regrouped, and senior Julia Whaley delivered five kills in a game-ending, 11-3 run to help swing the advantage to her team.“We know that one kill is not going to get you three points,” Whaley said. “So our focus became, don’t look at the score... don’t let past mistakes affect our momentum at all.”What it meansThe Golden Knights secured their seventh Bergen County title all-time, the fourth-most behind Paramus (11), Demarest and IHA (9 each). The Blue Eagles (19-5) and Old Tappan have been to more championship finals than any other schools with 17 and 16 appearances, respectively. This year brought about the first best-of-5 final since 2003, when Pascack Valley bested Demarest, 3-2.The big-picture comebackOld Tappan graduated several stars from the 2024 county-title team that went on to finish 25-0. Back-to-back losses followed a 4-0 start this fall, as coach Melissa Landeck had to navigate numerous early-season injuries.“We started the year without three starters, and at one point, we were down four starters,” said Landeck, whose team has used 12 different starting lineups. “So, we had a lot of work to do to compete in September with younger kids doing an outstanding job pitching in.“Then, we had to work on jelling as kids came back, so this has not been an easy road, by any means.”Key sequenceIHA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth set and had it tied at 6-6 before the Golden Knights took command. Opposite Eva Curko, one of the players who missed time earlier in the year, had a pair of kills during a 9-2 run that she punctuated with an ace.“When we were down, it’s really easy to get sucked into the negative emotions,” Curko said. “But as a team, we did a really good job of staying positive on the court, keeping our energy up… and playing for each other.“That’s ultimately what helped us succeed.”Game balls► Whaley (18 kills, 23 digs) and Curko (7 kills, 7 digs, 3 blocks), both seniors from Norwood, led the Old Tappan attack along with junior Bianca Benasillo (14 kills).► Golden Knights setter Joley Giordano put up 40 assists, including a pass to senior Gabriela Paltag for the championship point.

Sparta, 25-13, 25-19First, let’s take a moment to give due respect to No. 1 seed River Dell (19-4). The Hawks tied Ramsey for first place in the Big North-Patriot to secure a share of their sixth consecutive division title. They prepped for this tournament with a five-set win over Bergen County top seed Ramapo and earned a first-round bye in the section. That said, it is very difficult to choose a stronger favorite than Old Tappan (16-4) – even if the Golden Knights are not unbeaten, as they were last season. The reigning state champs begin with a bye, and the Nov. 1 Bergen County final against Immaculate Heart provided their tune-up. No. 3 Demarest (14-4) split the season series with Northern Valley rival Old Tappan.

Old Tappan heading for another county final showdown vs IHA

Oct 26, 2025

OLD TAPPAN - Immaculate Heart Academy and Northern Valley/Old Tappan will meet for the 2025 BCWCA volleyball championship Nov. 1 after winning their respective semifinal matches on Saturday in Old Tappan. In the first match of the day Old Tappan topped Tenafly, 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-22), in a hard fought, back-and-forth battle. It was the third time the teams played this season with each winning one of the matches."It never gets any easier, especially when you know it's a well-coached team that competes every time you play them," said Old Tappan coach Melissa Landeck. "But that's the structure of our league, the county and our state group that you keep seeing the same teams over and over."In the first set the Tigers led by as many as 5 points after junior outside hitter Sivan Aburus (4 kills, 7 digs) served back-to-back aces and sophomore outside hitter Lexi McGinty (9 kills, 15 digs) blasted a kill. But it seemed like every time the Lady Tigers got a bit of a lead, Old Tappan's overwhelming firepower took over.Tenafly led by three when Old Tappan junior defensive specialist Kate Finn stepped to the service line, where she reeled off 8 consecutive service winners as the Golden Knights took the lead for the first time in the set.Old Tappan expanded its lead as senior hitters Julia Whaley (match-high 11 kills, 8 digs) and Eva Curko (6 kills, 4 blocks, 3 assists, 3 aces), senior middle blocker Gaby Paltag (6 kills 2 blocks), junior hitter Bianca Benasillo (9 kills, 1 block) and sophomore middle blocker Nadine Whaley (3 kills, 3 blocks, 2 digs) pounded kills. The Tigers clawed back to cut the lead to 17-16 but Knights junior setter Joley Giordano (27 assists, 2 kills, 4 blocks, 7 digs) served out the set, ending the 25-16 win with a service ace."We've worked a lot on our serving especially with coach (Landeck) always making us serve on a one-on-five," Paltag said. "She's really competitive and she makes us want to have that competition as well. All that competition goes right into our practice, right into our serving. We always do team serving so if someone misses we all have to start over again.Tenafly jumped out to a 5-1 lead on a pair of service aces by junior setter Mia Bareket (15 assists) and three Old Tappan attack errors to begin the second set.The teams traded points as the Golden Knights inched closer. Curko's blast tied the set 11-all and Paltag put Old Tappan ahead for good, 12-11, with a thunderous kill. The Knights led by 8 points, 23-15 when the Tigers caught fire with a 6-1 run to close to 24-22. But Paltag blocked a shot and Old Tappan took a 2-0 lead in sets with the 25-22 win.A pretty strong offense got better a week or so ago when Paltag returned to the lineup for the first time since September."I was out for a while (about 5 weeks) because I had an ankle sprain," she said. "We thought it was minor - it wasn't too bad on my left ankle - but I'm really happy I was able to come back. It was stressful. I love playing - it's my favorite thing - so I'm just happy to be back with my team.""[It's great] with Gaby coming back after an injury that was unexpected," added Julia Whaley. "It kind of started our season off with 'wow, another injury.' But it's nice to have another senior, especially for leadership, and it's nice having another player who can put the ball away. It's comforting and it gives Joley (Giordano) more options. They, on the other side, are not able to cheat on any of us because we're all able to put the ball away."The third set was the most closely contested set of the match, with 8 ties and several lead changes. Old Tappan took the lead for good when Nadine Whaley crushed a kill for a 21-20 lead. Giordano smacked a kill to gain a match point and 2 points later Curko ended the match with a kill."It's the first few weeks of having the whole team back together," Julia Whaley said. "We're still building trust on the court because we've experienced so many rotations throughout the entire season. Right now we're just settling in with the 14 of us all there, especially in practice.""I thought we had a good day offensively today," said Landeck. "Joley (Giordano) did a good job of finding her hitters and mixing it up to keep their defense off balance. Everybody was ready to chip in."Tenafly moves on to close out the regular season and get ready for state competition."I'm proud of the way my girls worked," said Tenafly coach Jeff Koehler. "We made some mental errors in the first two games. The second and third games we played a lot better but the power they have and how smart they are kept them going. We have to keep working harder and hopefully we learned how to play for the states."For now the Golden Knights are content with the victory as they move on to the next round and as they continue to come together as a team."We have a good team chemistry," Paltag said. "Our team chemistry is really, really good. We're really tight together. Some of us have had injuries and been off the court. We just got closer especially since we've had so many lineups and so much adversity. With the adversity we've had so many things going well for us. We put that into our game. We want to be fired up and we want to do the whole team as one. Everyone has to do it as one because we win as one. We don't win as separate islands.""For us even though it's late October it feels earlier in the season psychologically," Landeck said, "because we've only had a full contingent for the past couple of weeks. We are a team that can really peak late. We're just finding our groove which other teams found earlier on because they were healthy."The second match of the day was another competitive battle with Immaculate Heart Academy prevailing in four sets, (25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 25-16), over Northern Valley/Demarest."It wasn't easy," said IHA coach Michelle Yoo. "I think all of the teams we have come up against every Saturday have played a great match. For us it's about keeping our eyes forward and committing to our training."To make it to this semifinal match with Demarest IHA had to get past Midland Park in 3 sets in the opening round. The next two rounds featured great battles with Westwood and Ramapo in 5-set marathons. In each of those contests they were down in sets, 2-1, before fighting back to win in 5 sets.Playing against Demarest, the No. 4 seed, was equally hard as the first three sets were decided by 11 points in total and the score was tied 24 times in those three sets. The Blue Eagles won sets 1 and 2, but the Norsewomen stepped up and grabbed set No. 3. Immaculate Heart fought back to take the fourth set and the match 25-16.The difference in the match may very well have been sophomore Adrielle Crump, who dominated the net, pounding 30 kills, blocking 3 shots, scooping 8 digs and serving 4 aces."She's a versatile player," said Yoo. "The passion she puts behind her game is really unheard of."In the first set Crump tallied 3 aces, including one that tied the set 18-18 and spurred the Eagles to take the lead for good. She also had 6 kills in the set. Then Crump added 7 more kills in the second set, including the set-winning blast."She played middle last year," said Yoo, "and it just goes to show that any player with versatility can really shine out there. She does it all."Demarest copped the third set as senior Schuyler Berenbroick and junior Deana Finkelstein, who each tallied a team-high 10 kills, contributed 3 kills in the set. The Norsewomen took the lead for good, 22-21, and closed it out on a Finkelstein kill sandwiched by two attack errors.Immaculate Heart got back on track in the fourth set, taking the lead for good, 7-6, on an errant Demarest serve. Sophia Mahon caught fire, with 2 kills and 2 blocks along the way. She finished with 7 kills, 7 blocks and 8 digs in the match. A block by Mahon set up a match point and when sophomore Julianna Rambadt blocked the next shot the match ended.Blue Eagles freshman Anabelle Albano had a good match with 5 kills, 5 blocks and 2 digs. Sophomore Lilith Roman scooped 41 digs, while senior Ella Kovalcik and junior Emma Fowler combined for 29 digs. Sophomore Kristin Lee distributed an incredible 45 assists, scooped 10 digs and served 3 aces.Demarest senior Elizaveta Fishbeyn finished with 8 kills and 2 blocks, junior Kara Kim scooped 22 digs and dished 4 assists, junior Jade Chang had 13 digs and an ace and sophomore Maya Snir distributed 14 assists and had 7 digs.Immaculate Heart moves on to play the Golden Knights for the third year in a row. IHA won in 2023, while Old Tappan was the 2024 county champion."It's a huge testament to the dedication and motivation the girls have that's really bringing us our success" said Yoo.

Old Tappan football picks up right where it left off with opening win over West Essex

Aug 29, 2025

NORTH CALDWELL − On Old Tappan's first play from scrimmage, Zach Miceli served up a taste of what's to come this season. The junior quarterback threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to send the defending Group 3 state champions off to a season-opening 34-14 win over West Essex on Aug. 29.“With this guy, it’s always in the arsenal,” Old Tappan coach Brian Dunn said of Miceli. “If they give us the right look, he’s always ready to do it.”Miceli's TD pass went to junior receiver Leo Etter, and the right-hander completed 16 of 20 passes for 204 yards and two scores before taking a seat late in the third quarter.Miceli also threw a 4-yard score to senior receiver Joey Crescitelli late in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead.“It starts up front in the trenches,” said Miceli, whose last season threw for 2,269 yards and 19 scores. “We have a lot of guys coming back with experience, and guys who are filling in did a great job. Obviously mistakes everywhere, and we’re going to clean those up. But it started in the trenches, and then our guys outside just made plays like they always do.”Senior running back Damian Du Toit scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter to extend the lead to 21-0. Senior running back Devyn Radoian scored on a 20-yard run in the second quarter for a 28-0 lead, and he scored on a 7-yard run in the third to give the Golden Knights a 34-7 lead.West Essex scored late in each half. Senior quarterback Jake Long threw a 13-yard TD pass to senior receiver Justin Perini in the second quarter, and junior running back Michael Lozito scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth. What it meansOld Tappan looked like a team ranked No. 1 in the North Jersey Public Top 20 and No. 10 in the New Jersey Super 25. The Golden Knights were solid in all areas and contributed to North Jersey making a strong showing in season openers.“I think we performed OK,” Radoian said. “We’re coming off a Group 3 state championship and we have a lot of work to put in, but we’re going to get there, we’re going to get there fast, and we’re going to keep coming out exploding. Our offense is a very explosive type of offense. We like to run, we like to pass, we do it all. And we’ve got a couple of young kids on defense, and we’re just going to keep shining out there.”Big-play startMiceli’s TD pass Etter came on a deep post up the left side, and Old Tappan had its first score of the season just 12 seconds into the game. Miceli hit Etter in perfect stride.“We ran through that play a lot in practice,” Etter said. “We knew the post would be open, and we knew we were going to hit it early. We didn’t know what play it was going to be, but we knew we were going to hit it early. Me and Zach were ready for it, and coach [Dunn] called a great play.”“Honestly, I never decide what we’re running until we get on the field for the first play, unless there's something special that we have to do,” Dunn said. "It just looked like something that we could get right off the bat, and the kids executed and Zach threw a great ball.”By the numbersOld Tappan amassed 363 total yards, including 159 rushing. The Golden Knights spread the ball around to the running backs, with Radoian and Du Toit handling a majority of the carries.“They’re good, and they all give us a different look,” Dunn said of the running backs. “They’re all getting a crack at it for the first time.”West Essex had 201 total yards, including 138 rushing. The Knights were at their best with Long running up the middle and mixing in an occasional pass.

Old Tappan's Caroline Ognibene is only North Jersey athlete with two individual medals

Jun 05, 2025

Soph Caroline Ognibene is only North Jersey athlete with two individual medalsOne could call Caroline Ognibene’s performance at the Group 3 Championships the best in her short but storied career. After all, the Old Tappan soph set personal records in the long jump and pole vault while placing third in the high jump. That’s a complete performance. However, nothing compared to her performance at SMOC, where she set personal records while being in two places simultaneously. Ognibene was the only North Jersey athlete at the State Meet of Champions to place in the top eight in multiple individual events. “The goal was to place at states in both events and doing both of those throughout the entire season helped me get to where I am today,” Ognibene said. Ognibene first placed fourth in the high jump of 5-6 in one end zone and then rushed to the pole vault pit beyond the opposite end zone, where she and her fellow Golden Knights vaulter Jamie Kim, who medaled at SMOC for the fourth straight year, placed sixth and seventh, respectively, with a vault of 11-0. It was at least the fourth time she had raced back and forth during the competition. "She did all that and got her steps in, too'', joked OT boys head coach Pete Dunn.“It was a great send-off and definitely motivating for next year,” Ognibene said.
