In a clash between two of Bergen County’s top volleyball programs, Old Tappan battled back from an early deficit to defeat rival Demarest 16-25, 25-22, 25-20. The comeback win improved Old Tappan’s record to 5-2 and added another chapter to one of the area’s most competitive rivalries.
Demarest opened strong behind Schuyler Berenbroick (16 kills) and Deana Finkelstein (8 kills, 9 digs), taking the first set 25-16. But Old Tappan responded with sharper passing and balanced offense in the final two sets.
Julia Whaley led the Knights with 15 kills, 11 digs, and 2 aces, providing steady leadership throughout the match. Joley Giordano guided the offense with 24 assists, 9 digs, and 3 blocks, while Bianca Benasillo added 9 kills and Nadine Whaley contributed 8 kills and 2 blocks.
Supporting the attack, Maya Fernandez finished with 2 kills, 5 assists, and an ace. Phoebe Malady added 3 kills and 2 blocks. Defensively, Desi Malafis recorded 11 digs, and Adriana Bryan added 5 digs to anchor the back row. Kate Finn and Alexa Caunedo chipped in with strong serving and steady defense, each registering an ace, while McKenna Perez gave key minutes off the bench.
After a dominant close to the second set, Old Tappan carried its momentum through the third, using consistent ball control and timely hitting to seal the rivalry win. The Knights’ depth and resilience proved the difference, setting the tone for the upcoming Bergen County Tournament.
