New Providence moved to 2-0 with a commanding 37-14 win over Johnson, powered by a dominant rushing attack and a balanced defensive effort.
The Pioneers wasted no time setting the tone. A.J. Whitehead broke through for a 10-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, then added two more scores before halftime. Kevin Reilly’s 1-yard plunge pushed the lead to 21-0 before Johnson answered with a short run from Zaire Majerska.
In the third quarter, Whitehead exploded for his fourth touchdown of the night, a 36-yarder, and kicker Daniel Porretti tacked on a 33-yard field goal. Whitehead capped his monster night with a 13-yard scoring run in the fourth. Johnson added a late touchdown, but New Providence had long since sealed control.
A.J. Whitehead: 16 carries, 158 yards, 4 TDs, plus 4 tackles on defense.
Kevin Reilly: 46 rushing yards and 1 TD, also threw for 23 yards.
Daniel Porretti: perfect in the kicking game, hitting a field goal and 4 extra points.
Tight end James Keneally hauled in a 9-yard reception to keep the offense moving. On defense, he added three solo tackles, showing his toughness at defensive end and helping slow Johnson’s run game. Keneally’s leadership on both sides of the ball gave New Providence the physical edge they needed.
Linebacker Mike Petses led the way with 11 tackles, while Drew Gullo and Christian Benward added double-digit stops. The defense as a whole forced Johnson into just 79 passing yards and under 5 yards per carry.
New Providence now looks to carry its momentum into next week as they continue to showcase a strong rushing attack, physical defense, and standout performances from their seniors.
